How to cultivate reading habits in children

“'What is the use of a book,' thought Alice, 'without pictures or conversations? '”

~ Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland

There are considerable advantages when a child cultivates reading habits. Most importantly, when a child starts reading, he/she is weaned away from electronic gadgets. Here are some guidelines about encouraging a child to start reading books.

Read aloud.

Read Aloud is a must. It is like hearing a new language through interesting stories. Adding to that, illustrations will help to understand the text as well as the spoken word. It facilitates listening skills as children understand the spoken text better.

Choose the right place.

Create a nice place to read. It will become a special place and the children will associate it with reading. Positive vibes are created as well as received by the child to read.

Fix a time for reading.

To cultivate a good habit, consistency as well as doing it at a specific time is important – like the child brushes his/her teeth on waking up. Reading regularly at a particular time can develop a good reading habit.

Read with a friend/family member.

It is better to read with a companion than reading alone. At times, the child might want to share exciting things about what they read with others. Preferably, make them read with a friend.

Printed books are better.

There are quite a lot of gadgets available in the market. Always start with printed books rather than digital ones. Once the children advance, they could very well explore other mediums.

Start with humorous and fun-filled stories.

Who doesn’t like a hearty laugh? Once kids enjoy a funny story, they will be motivated to read other genres such as fairy tales, fables, folk tales, and so on.

Visit Library.

Libraries are treasure troves of books. Cultivating children to visit the library and making them explore various books will help them enrich their vocabulary, grammar, and reading habit.
