Tips to Help Your Child Communicate Better

“After death, is there life, or is death the end?”

Asked Nachiketa.
Yama said it was a tough question to answer, even the gods were not clear about the answer.
From ‘The Upanishad’ – conversation of a young boy Nachiketa with Yama, known as the God of death in Hindu mythology.

The way your kid speaks as well as listens makes a considerable difference to their chance of success from a tender age. Support them learn to express themselves clearly and with confidence in easier ways.

Most often, children communicate with others, especially parents, in one-word answers. Many parents want to know how better to connect with their kids so that their kids can share feelings, thoughts as well as experiences with them.

We are usually keen to lead conversations and to test kids’ knowledge. But, repeated parental use of instructional and corrective statements results in delayed language development in kids. Try to indulge in a chat with a comment, rather than questioning your kid.

Respond to your kid with real emotion. Respect their feelings and if you are ready to listen, they will open up and share many things with you. Spend meaningful time with them and listen attentively. This will go a long way.

Open-ended questions such as ‘What shall we do…?’, ‘Could you find a way to…?’ can support learning and develop creative thinking as well as problem-solving skills. This is compared to closed questions like, ‘What is the capital of India?’ which results in a one-word answer only.

Quite often kids require extra time to comprehend a question and think of their answer. Rather than jumping in to help them answer, wait to see if your kid answers. You will often be amazed by the results.

Your kid is watching you carefully. If you communicate with others with compassion and respect, your kid will most likely follow your lead and take on your good manners as she/he becomes more verbal.

Motivate your kid to think proactively about solutions. When faced with a decision that you as well as your kid disagree on, ask your kid what she/he would like to change. This enables them to see that there are options/solutions to every problem. They will become more communicable and strive to solve issues in a meaningful manner.

Our digital classrooms help our students to become better communicators. We encourage active listening and interactive sessions at Thaamarai World School – one of Coimbatore’s top 10 schools.
